Movie Moment - photography and art direction
A brief to reconstruct or produce a parody of a famous/iconic scene
we were given two films, the one's that i had were Forrest Gump and Mission Impossiable, i thought that Forrest Gump would be the best choice as there is a varitiy of things that i would be able to do with this. However i did look at the other movie to see if there would be any good scence from the movie Mission Impossiable. the most famous from Mission Impossiable is the scence where he is is on a wire keeping him off the floor so that he doesn't set off the alarm.

Here are some scences from the movie mission impossiable, and also some parodies of the film aswell.
Here are the Parodies of mission impossiable
Title: Forrest Gump
Made: 1994
Runtime: 142 min
Genre: Drama/ Romance
Starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise
Directed by: Robert Zemeckis
About: Forrest Gump is about a low iQ man’s journey through life with his best friend jenny, and meeting historical figures and experiencing historical events.

Here I have gathered some iconic scenes from the movie and also some parody images what other people have done. My task is to reproduce one of these scenes or make my own parody image of a famous scene from Forrest Gump.
And here are some parody images of Forrest Gump
Creative Direction
My intention is to recreate the bench scene from Forrest Gump. I have opted to create this as a parody, by making a model of Forrest Gump out of sculpy clay. I am also going to recreate the suitcase and box of chocolates out of clay, and the bench out of basal wood. To make the model I have found a website from artist called Emi Sfard, who shows easy steps of how to recreate a clay model figure. http://emisfard.com/sculpture/how-to-clone-yourself-in-polymer-clay/ within the background I plan to either have a plain white background, or recreate the background of the park, by having floor tiles and a block of wood painted grey for the wall behind and have this with vines. Behind the wall I will get a few potted plants to create the idea of the trees behind him.
Location
My photo shoot will take place in the photography studio, where I will either have a plain background or set up a background of a mini park using props.
Model
The model will be my clay figure that I make myself .I will go into great detail on my model, from the different shades of blue on his check shirt, to the creases in his suit, the colour of his socks, and the Nike red tick on his trainers. I will try to make the model resemble Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) but hopefully he should still have a comical look about him, perhaps a bit like Wallace and Gromit characters and the appearance of them.
Ideas of how he is going to look
Here is the making of my Forrest Gump model
Here i've closely looked at how Gumps hands look, so i could get them right,i also looked at the detail such as his belt on his trousers.
Props
Mini suitcase- This will be create out of clay and will have similar shades of colours to the one in the scene, I will also create all the detail of the darker shade of brown rim around the outer side.
Box of chocolates- This will be made from clay too, it will be a white box, with a red bow on the top.
The bench- This will be made from basal wood, 3 panels along the back and 3 panels on the seat. I will use a thicker piece of wood to create to legs; this will be painted grey so that it appears to look like cement block that’s on the images of that scene.
Feather- I’ll be using a small white feather, which I’ve found from Hanley Park, which will be places my Forrest Gump’s feet.
Printed tiles –I will try and get a good quality images of tiles off the internet to use for the floor, however after trying to find this i was struck with a problem that the images weren't looking at the tiles from the right angle, therefore i have now decided to cut squares out of brown and cream card to create a tile effect.
Wall- I will use a block of wood which I will paint grey to form the wall behind him.
i also could not use the block of wood for my wall, as the size it needed to be the wood was too heavy, so i created a lighter version by using card to construct a 3D wall, painting it grey then adding green paint at the top, a layer of paper vines, felt vines and clay vines to build up the effect of a thick vines along the wall.
Trees-I will use planted small fern trees, as the trees in the background, this will show more to the parody part of the image.
Wardrobe and Styling
All the clothes will be made out of the same clay I have used to create the model with.

Clothes – He will be wearing a cream suit, and a blue and white check shirt. He will have colourful striped sports socks and white trainers with a red Nike tick, which will be dirty and worn out.

Hair – He will have Forrest Gump’s reclining hairline, and structured hairline around the ears.
Pose and Staging
The model will be sitting down on the bench, his knees will be touching and his feet separated and pointed inwards, his hands will he placed on his knee gripping the box of chocolates. The suitcase will be next to him on the bench and a small white feather next to his foot. I will do two images, one will have a plain white background, and the other will have the park background behind him, this will become a mini scene.

Final Photo Shoot
camera
It was shot on a  Nikon  D90 with the ISO of 100, this was put on a moving constant lighting tripod, so it was easy to move to a better height and angle.

shot on auto

For this shot i used the constant lighting kit, i layed my scence out and made sure the trees were in the right position. we used a mixture of the constant lights and torches, the torches added highlights along forrest gumps face, the bench and forrest gumps arm. we also had the big constant light at the back shinning the light blue gel through to add a daytime background, and one light from the left, we also changed this so the light went to right aswell.

Assitance

cassie- lighting up forrest gump body from the right

Final photo shoot setup
Testing the lighting
The bench was lifting up so i put masking tape underneath Forrest Gump's feet to keep it all level and balanced.
i attempted a dark blue gel for the background to add a sky, however this was too dark and appeared to have a more night time appearance.
i used a light blue gel to give a daytime sky, this worked better and added something behond the trees.
The layout of the trees was too spaced out, and i thought i needed to bunch the trees up a bit.
This one has a beautiful lit image, i had the contanst light on the right side, and a tourch on his face from the right and a torch putting at him from the left. This seemed to light up all the right areas of Forrest Gump so that he didn't get lost within the busy background.
Here i re aranged the trees to a better setup, so that there wasn't as many gaps in the trees, and the trees seemed fuller.
Here i change a few of my final images to the correct size to see which one looked the best. The size was 400mm x 225mm and a resolution of 300dpi.
The Final image

For this brief we got allocated with two movies that we had to recreate a scene from, I choose Forrest Gump as it seemed the most appealing to me, I researched into different ways from using people to using the ken doll, but I couldn’t find clothes suitable for a ken doll. I wanted to recreate a parody to the bench scene in Forrest Gump, and so I found an illustrator who creates clay figures and teaches you how to make these. I thought this would be really interesting if I could recreate Forrest Gump out of clay. This is how I came to this conclusion to make my Forrest Gump. This was extremely fun and again it shows of what type of illustrator I am, as well as art director. As well as the model I also made the bench and wall, suitcase and box of chocolates. When putting the scene together I thought I need to get some trees, so I purchased some potted plants to create the bushy trees in the background, which also adds a contrast to the making, and makes it slightly real looking. The expression on Gump’s face, I feel I have captioned the sad emotion which works really well which the scene. The lighting I used constant lighting; this allowed me to highlight bits what needed showing off more, for example the face. Overall I’ve had fun creating and becoming the art director on the film Forrest Gump, it’s pushed my abilities and found new skills I didn’t know I had, as well as leaning more about constant lighting which will help me with future projects.
